The Story Behind Milbur Publications
Milbur Publication’s journey to bring a long-forgotten historical novel back into circulation began with Helen Miller Burchfiel, the grand-niece of its author. Growing up, she often heard stories drawn from her great-uncle’s tale of pioneer life in the Republic of Texas. When she inherited a fragile, tar-bound copy of the book from her mother, Leola (Griffith) Miller, she recognized its historical value and felt a deep responsibility to share it with a wider audience. After extensive research—including confirming the book’s public domain status—she founded Milbur Publications with the express purpose of restoring and republishing the novel. This labor of love involved carefully reconstructing missing sections, designing a new cover, and creating e-book, paperback, and audiobook editions.
The novel’s author, William Henry Miller, was born in Boonsville, Texas, on April 13, 1882. His life was as varied and spirited as the characters he created. After completing his education, he moved to the South Plains in 1902, where he pursued numerous ventures in land development, mercantile business, and oil exploration. He also published The Heights Weekly, but it was his passion for history and storytelling that defined his later years. The novel—originally published in 1953, the year of his passing—interweaves a fictional saga based on his own family’s legacy, incorporating more than 300 documented historical events and firsthand accounts. Through his vivid and realistic characters, he transports readers to the heart of the Texas frontier, preserving a piece of regional history that might otherwise have been lost.
